Museums and laughs

For those who know me, Im a total museum nerd. I prefer modern art museums but I dip my toe into what is going, to experience it and more likely than not, judge it and make fun of it (Im laughing with it, not at it). In the Netherlands you have the museumkaart which is available to residents and gives you access to over 400 museums across the Netherlands for roughly €60 a year, which is an absolute bargain, given that entry is normally around €20 per museum. Its great way to get out of the house, see new things and not really spend anything and dare I say, even become cultured (although I will always be a little bit of a heathen!).

Within my declaration of saying I want to see more of the Netherlands this year, Ive been exploring museums around the Netherlands. It kind of means that I dont really see the cities that Im visiting, as Im spending most of the day at the museum but it gets me out and to new places.

Here are a few of the places Ive visited:

The Arnhem Museum (sadly it was raining and I couldnt enjoy their sculpture garden) but they had some unique exhibits on. I think Id visit again with different exhibits and even have a look around the city, as apparently there is also an underground tour you can do.

Absolutely not a museum but it is my annual trip to the Keukenhof and then I went for the Amsterdam Tulip Experience. Both of these attractions are only open for 6 weeks a year but really you have a 2 week window at the end of April beginning of May for the best bloom. I was sadly too early this year to fully enjoy the flowers in bloom and it was a rather dull and grey day but I always enjoy my trip to the Keukenhof. It was my first time at the Amsterdam Tulip Experience and I can fully understand why tourists love it, as it has fields of tulips you can walk in and take tons of selfies, it explains the history of tulips and you even get to take 5 bulbs home with you. Im not entirely sure Id the Amsterdam Tulip Experience again but never say never!

Youseum (which is sadly now closed), this is purely a selfie experience and calling it a museum feels like a massive stretch. My friends and I try to get together to do something fun once a month, so we decided to visit The Hague to visit their Youseum and also visit the friend who lives in the Hague. There were other actual museums available to visit  in the political capital of the NLs but we decided for the fun options rather than the cultural/educated option. It was absolutely good fun, to be fair,  we always laugh no matter what we’re doing.

Kröller-Müller Museum is a completely unique experience. Its in the middle of a forest and they offer you free bikes to get around the forest. Naturally the American in me comes out and  I prefer to park as close to the front door as possible! However, I did think it was ‘super cute’ that they offer bikes to get around. For €12 park entrance, its worth it to me not to bike, Im not a pretty cyclist!  Its a art museum (with the second largest Van Gogh collection in the world and much bigger collection than the Van Gogh in Amsterdam) with an amazing sculpture garden, I enjoyed the garden more than I enjoyed the museum. Absolutely worth a visit.

I also took a trip to Germany to visit the Gasometer in Oberhausen. Anyone who knows me, knows that Im absolutely no tree hugger nor do I take sustainability seriously. It was a really interesting exhibit on global warming and the way in which the world is being ruined beyond global warming. Human are essentially the problem and we only care as long as we are directly impacted (thats reality).

In short, Ive been making the most of my museumkaart and exploring the Netherlands.

Next stop… a holiday in Egypt!
